The Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is one of the most iconic and energetic freshwater aquarium fish, displaying a striking golden-orange body with four bold black vertical stripes that give it its distinctive tiger-like appearance. Active, fast-moving, and full of personality, Tiger Barbs are best kept in groups where their natural schooling and social behaviour can be fully expressed — a large group creates a dazzling, constantly moving display of colour and energy. Sold as a group of 10 for optimal schooling behaviour.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 80L for a group of 10; larger groups in larger tanks reduce fin-nipping behaviour significantly
- Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5 | Temp 22–26°C | Prefers soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water
- Diet: Omnivorous — quality flake or micro pellet food; supplement with frozen or live daphnia, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; known fin-nippers — keep in groups of 10+ to minimise fin-nipping; avoid housing with long-finned or slow-moving species such as bettas, angelfish, or fancy guppies
- Tank Setup: Planted aquarium with open swimming areas; robust plants preferred as they may nibble on delicate vegetation
- Skill Level: Beginner–Intermediate
- Max Size: 7cm
