The Silver Shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus), also known as the Bala Shark, is a graceful and impressive freshwater fish displaying a bright, mirror-like silver body with distinctive black-edged yellow fins that give it a sleek, torpedo-shaped elegance. Despite its name, the Silver Shark is not a true shark but a large cyprinid that is peaceful, active, and best kept in groups where its natural schooling behaviour can be fully expressed. A stunning and fast-moving fish, the Silver Shark is a popular choice for larger community aquariums. Sold as a group of 5.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 300L for a group of 5; fast-growing and active swimmers that require significant space as adults — plan for a large tank long-term
- Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5 | Temp 22–28°C | Prefers soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water
- Diet: Omnivorous — quality flake or pellet food; supplement with frozen or live daphnia, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables; will graze on soft-leaved plants
- Temperament: Peaceful; excellent community fish with medium to large non-aggressive species — avoid housing with very small fish as they may be eaten when the sharks reach adult size
- Tank Setup: Large open aquarium with plenty of swimming space; secure lid essential as Silver Sharks are prone to jumping when startled
- Skill Level: Intermediate
- Max Size: 35cm
