The Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques) is a bold and vibrant schooling fish from the Amazon and Paraguay River basins, displaying a rich blood-red to orange-red body with a distinctive black shoulder spot and striking black-edged fins. One of the most eye-catching tetras available, a school of Serpaes creates a vivid splash of colour in any community aquarium.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 60L; best kept in schools of 10 or more — larger groups reduce fin-nipping behaviour
- Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.5 | Temp 22–28°C | Soft to moderately hard water preferred
- Diet: Omnivorous — quality flake and micro pellet foods; supplement with frozen or live daphnia and brine shrimp
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; known to nip fins — keep in large schools and avoid long-finned or slow-moving tank mates
- Tank Setup: Planted aquarium with open swimming space; darker substrate enhances their vivid red colouration
- Skill Level: Beginner
- Max Size: 4.5cm
