The Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) is one of the most ancient and fascinating fish in the freshwater hobby, belonging to a lineage that dates back over 400 million years. Native to the shallow, slow-moving waters and floodplains of West and Central Africa, this prehistoric predator is instantly recognisable by its elongated, eel-like body, armoured scales, and distinctive series of dorsal finlets that run along its back. At 15cm, this is a well-grown juvenile with its full prehistoric character already on display — a truly captivating centrepiece for a large predator or species tank.
