The Rummynose Tetra (Hemigrammus rhodostomus) is one of the most prized schooling fish in the freshwater hobby, instantly recognisable by its vivid red nose, silver body, and bold black-and-white striped tail. Famous for their tight, synchronised schooling behaviour, a group of Rummynose Tetras moving as one through a planted aquarium is a truly mesmerising sight. They are a benchmark species for well-maintained, mature aquariums.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 80L; best kept in schools of 10 or more — larger schools produce the most impressive shoaling behaviour
- Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.0 | Temp 24–28°C | Soft, slightly acidic water strongly preferred; sensitive to poor water quality
- Diet: Omnivorous — quality micro pellets and flake food; supplement with frozen or live daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms
- Temperament: Peaceful; ideal community fish — avoid housing with large or aggressive fish
- Tank Setup: Densely planted aquarium with open swimming space; dark substrate and tannin-stained water enhances their vivid red colouration and encourages tight schooling
- Skill Level: Intermediate — requires stable, well-maintained water parameters
- Max Size: 5cm
