The Red Edge Apistogramma (Apistogramma viejita) is a breathtaking and rarely available dwarf cichlid from the Orinoco River basin in Colombia. Males display a vivid golden-yellow body with striking red-edged fins — a bold crimson border running along the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins that creates a dramatic, jewel-like contrast against their warm base colouration. One of the more sought-after Apistogramma species in the hobby, the Red Edge is a true collector's fish that rewards experienced fishkeepers with fascinating behaviour, strong pair bonds, and outstanding visual impact in a well-planted aquarium.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 80L; best kept as a pair or harem (one male to two or more females) in a species-focused or soft water community setup
- Water Parameters: pH 5.0–7.0 | Temp 24–29°C | Soft, warm, slightly acidic water essential — sensitive to hard or alkaline conditions
- Diet: Omnivorous — high-quality micro pellets and small granules; supplement with frozen or live daphnia, baby brine shrimp, bloodworm, and small invertebrates
- Temperament: Peaceful toward dissimilar species; males territorial toward each other and may display aggression when breeding — provide plenty of caves and visual breaks
- Tank Setup: Heavily planted aquarium with soft substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and multiple caves or coconut shells for spawning; dim lighting and tannin-stained water strongly recommended
- Skill Level: Intermediate–Advanced
- Max Size: 7cm (males); 4–5cm (females)
