The Peppermint Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a striking and highly sought-after pleco from the Rio Xingu and surrounding river systems in Brazil. Displaying a dark charcoal-black body covered in crisp white spots that resemble a peppermint pattern, it is one of the most visually impressive Bristlenose variants available. Hardy, peaceful, and an excellent algae grazer, the Peppermint BN is a premium addition to planted and aquascaped aquariums where its bold colouration truly stands out.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 80L; can be kept singly or in pairs — males can be territorial with other males
- Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5 | Temp 26–30°C | Prefers warmer water than common Bristlenose; originates from warm Amazonian tributaries
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous — quality algae wafers and sinking vegetable-based pellets; supplement with blanched zucchini, cucumber, and spinach; occasional protein via bloodworm or brine shrimp
- Temperament: Peaceful; excellent community fish — may be mildly territorial toward other plecos of the same species
- Tank Setup: Driftwood is highly recommended — essential for their digestive health and natural rasping behaviour; planted aquarium with hiding spots and caves
- Skill Level: Intermediate — requires warmer temperatures than standard Bristlenose
- Max Size: 12–15cm
