Natural Black Aquarium Sand 1mm is an ultra-fine, naturally dark substrate that creates a striking contrast against vibrant plants and colourful fish. Its fine grain size mimics natural riverbeds and is especially loved by bottom-dwelling species, while the deep black tone makes colours pop in any aquascape.

Important Disclaimer

This substrate is crushed granite and has the following properties to be aware of before purchasing:

• Sharp edges — not suitable for digging or burrowing catfish and other species that sift through substrate, as it may cause injury
• Slightly raises pH — monitor water parameters after use, particularly in soft water setups
• Slightly metallic — due to its mineral composition
• ⚠️ Not suitable for shrimp tanks

How Much Do I Need?

Standard tanks — guide only, tank footprint will determine quantity required:

• 60L tank → ~10kg
• 120L tank → ~20kg
• 200L tank → ~35kg

Planted tanks — we recommend a minimum of 2" (5cm) of substrate depth for healthy root development. Double the quantities above as a starting guide.
