The Montezuma Swordtail (Xiphophorus montezumae) is a wild-type swordtail species native to the Rio Pánuco basin in Mexico, and a fascinating alternative to the more commonly kept domesticated swordtail varieties. Distinguished by its natural, unmodified colouration — typically an olive-green to tan body with subtle lateral banding and the characteristic elongated sword extension on the male's tail — the Montezuma Swordtail is prized by livebearer enthusiasts and biotope aquarists for its wild form and active, natural behaviour. At 7cm these are well-grown specimens showing their full adult character.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 120L; active swimmers that appreciate length over height; males territorial with each other — keep one male to multiple females or in a spacious community
- Water Parameters: pH 7.0–8.0 | Temp 20–26°C | Prefers cooler, hard, alkaline water reflecting its highland Mexican river origins
- Diet: Omnivorous — quality flake or micro pellet food; supplement with frozen or live daphnia, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables; grazes on algae and biofilm naturally
- Temperament: Generally peaceful toward other species; males can be aggressive toward each other — avoid keeping multiple males in smaller tanks
- Tank Setup: Planted aquarium with open swimming areas and moderate flow; hardy plants and some current appreciated
- Skill Level: Beginner–Intermediate
- Max Size: Males up to 7cm body + sword extension; females up to 8cm
