Mermaid Weed (Proserpinaca palustris) is a captivating and highly sought-after stem plant native to the wetlands and marshes of North and Central America, prized in the aquarium hobby for its dramatic leaf transformation. Emersed leaves are serrated and lance-shaped, but once submerged, they morph into deeply pinnate, feathery fronds in warm amber, orange, and red tones — a metamorphosis that makes it one of the most visually striking plants in any high-tech aquascape. Its rich autumnal colouration and delicate texture create a stunning focal point in the midground to background of any planted tank.
Propagation: Take stem cuttings of 5–10cm, remove lower leaves, and replant into the substrate. Regular trimming encourages bushy, dense growth and intensifies leaf colouration.
