Hygrophila polysperma is one of the hardiest and most adaptable aquarium plants in the hobby, native to the rivers and streams of South and Southeast Asia. Its light green, oval leaves grow in opposite pairs along sturdy stems, creating a lush, full backdrop that suits virtually any freshwater aquarium. Incredibly fast-growing and tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, it is a go-to choice for beginners and a reliable workhorse for nutrient control in established tanks. Left untrimmed, it will reach the surface and even grow emersed, producing small white flowers above the waterline.
Propagation: Take stem cuttings of 5–10cm, remove lower leaves, and replant into the substrate. Grows rapidly — trim frequently to prevent it from shading out other plants. Surface leaves will readily produce new plantlets.
