Hygrophila balsamica is a rare and distinctive stem plant from India and Sri Lanka, prized among collectors for its unusually textured, deeply veined leaves with serrated margins that give it a bold, almost tropical appearance unlike most other Hygrophila species. Its foliage presents in rich green tones with a slightly bullate (puckered) surface that catches light beautifully, creating a lush, dramatic backdrop in the background of any planted aquarium. Relatively undemanding for such an uncommon plant, it is a rewarding find for aquarists looking to add genuine rarity and character to their scape.
Propagation: Take stem cuttings of 5–10cm, remove lower leaves, and replant into the substrate. Grows at a moderate pace and benefits from regular trimming to maintain shape.
