The Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata), also known as the Reticulated Hillstream Loach or Tiger Hillstream Loach, is a stunning and highly specialised loach from the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich hill streams of Vietnam. Displaying a flattened, hydrodynamic body with an intricate pattern of golden-yellow spots and reticulations over a dark brown base, this species has evolved a remarkable sucker-like underside that allows it to cling effortlessly to rocks and glass in powerful currents. One of the most visually striking hillstream loaches available, it is both a fascinating behavioural specimen and an effective biofilm and algae grazer.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 80L; can be kept in small groups — males can be territorial with each other but generally peaceful in spacious tanks with ample territory
- Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5 | Temp 20–26°C | Requires highly oxygenated, clean, fast-flowing water; very sensitive to poor water quality and low oxygen — not suitable for stagnant or warm setups
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous — grazes biofilm and algae from rocks and glass naturally; supplement with algae wafers, blanched zucchini, and spirulina-based foods; occasional protein via small frozen foods
- Temperament: Peaceful toward other species; males may spar with each other — provide ample space and visual breaks
- Tank Setup: Rocky aquascape with smooth stones, slate, or river pebbles; strong water flow from powerheads or wavemakers; well-established tank with natural biofilm growth; avoid soft substrates
- Skill Level: Intermediate — requires specific high-flow, high-oxygen water conditions
- Max Size: 6–7cm
