Frontosa Black Widow

The Frontosa Black Widow (Cyphotilapia frontosa 'Black Widow') is a stunning and highly sought-after variant of the iconic Frontosa cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, displaying a dramatic deep black and white banded pattern with the characteristic pronounced nuchal hump that develops in mature males. A slow-moving, regal fish, the Frontosa is one of the most impressive and collectible African cichlids available — and at 18–20cm, these are large, mature specimens ready to be the centrepiece of a serious display tank.

• Tank Size: Minimum 400L; a very large, deep tank is strongly recommended for a species this size
• Water Parameters: pH 7.8–8.5 | Temp 24–26°C | Hard, alkaline water essential — replicates Lake Tanganyika conditions
• Diet: Carnivorous — quality large cichlid pellets, frozen fish, silversides, and krill; avoid feeder fish
• Temperament: Predatory but generally peaceful with similarly sized tank mates; will eat smaller fish; best kept in species groups or with other large Tanganyikan cichlids
• Tank Setup: Rocky aquascape with large caves and open sandy areas; subdued lighting suits their deep-water origins
