The Elephant Nose Fish (Gnathonemus petersii) is one of the most extraordinary and intelligent freshwater fish in the hobby, instantly recognisable by its elongated, trunk-like rostrum — a highly sensitive electroreceptive organ used to navigate, communicate, and locate food in the murky river systems of West and Central Africa. Possessing one of the largest brain-to-body ratios of any fish, the Elephant Nose is a genuinely fascinating species that rewards patient, experienced fishkeepers with remarkable behaviour and personality. Rarely available at this size, this is a true collector's specimen.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 200L; requires space to establish territory and roam; a longer tank is preferred over a tall one
- Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.2 | Temp 23–28°C | Soft, slightly acidic water preferred; sensitive to poor water quality — pristine conditions essential
- Diet: Carnivorous — prefers live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, tubifex, blackworm, and daphnia; can be trained onto high-quality sinking pellets over time
- Temperament: Generally peaceful toward dissimilar species; can be aggressive toward its own kind and other weakly electric fish — best kept singly or with robust, non-aggressive tankmates
- Tank Setup: Dimly lit aquarium with plenty of hiding spots — caves, driftwood, and dense planting; soft substrate preferred; avoid bright lighting and open, exposed spaces
- Skill Level: Advanced
- Max Size: 25–35cm
Please note: Elephant Nose Fish are sensitive to water quality and medications. Use caution with any chemical treatments and maintain excellent filtration and regular water changes.
