The Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus) is one of the most iconic and beloved freshwater fish in the hobby, instantly recognisable by its vivid orange body adorned with bold black vertical bands and striking red-orange fins. Native to the river systems of Sumatra and Borneo, Clown Loaches are highly social, playful, and full of personality — known for their entertaining behaviours including lying on their sides to rest, which can alarm new keepers but is perfectly normal. A long-lived species that grows large over time, they are a rewarding commitment for dedicated aquarists.

Care Guide

  • Tank Size: Minimum 300L for adults; best kept in groups of 5 or more — highly social fish that become stressed and prone to disease when kept alone
  • Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5 | Temp 25–30°C | Soft, slightly acidic water preferred; excellent water quality is essential
  • Diet: Omnivorous — quality sinking pellets and wafers; supplement with frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp; enthusiastic snail eaters
  • Temperament: Peaceful; excellent community fish with similarly sized tank mates — avoid housing with very small fish as adults
  • Tank Setup: Spacious aquarium with smooth substrate, plenty of hiding spots such as caves and driftwood, and open swimming areas; a tight-fitting lid is essential
  • Skill Level: Intermediate — sensitive to poor water quality and ich; requires a large, mature aquarium long-term
  • Max Size: 30cm (slow growing; juveniles sold at small sizes)
