The Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) is a popular and hardworking algae-grazing fish, well known for its ability to clean algae from glass, rocks, and décor in the aquarium. Young CAEs are excellent algae consumers and are widely used as a natural algae control solution in community tanks. As they mature, they develop a more robust, golden-olive body with a distinctive sucker mouth adapted for rasping algae from surfaces. A practical and interesting fish for medium to large aquariums.
Care Guide
- Tank Size: Minimum 150L; grows large and becomes more territorial with age — provide plenty of space and hiding spots
- Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5 | Temp 22–28°C | Adaptable; tolerates a wide range of water conditions
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous — algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber); supplement with sinking pellets; note that adults may reduce algae grazing and become more omnivorous with age
- Temperament: Can become territorial and aggressive toward other bottom dwellers as it matures — best kept singly; may attach to flat-bodied fish when older
- Tank Setup: Aquarium with smooth rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots; open swimming areas also appreciated
- Skill Level: Beginner–Intermediate
- Max Size: 25–28cm
