Black Ghost Knifefish

The Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons) is one of the most captivating and unusual freshwater fish available in the hobby. Native to the fast-flowing rivers of South America, this jet-black, ribbon-bodied species uses a weak electric field to navigate and communicate in the wild. It glides through the water with an almost ghostly, undulating motion — hence its name. A truly unique specimen fish for the dedicated aquarist.

• Diet: Carnivore — frozen bloodworm, earthworm, brine shrimp, and sinking carnivore pellets; feeds primarily at night
• Temperament: Peaceful with larger fish; may be aggressive toward its own kind or similar species
• Tank Setup: Dim lighting, PVC tubes or caves for hiding, driftwood, and soft substrate; prefers low to moderate flow
• Skill Level: Advanced — sensitive to water quality and requires a well-established tank
