Sourcing Ethically: How We Choose Our Live Fish and Plants

Why Ethical Sourcing Matters in the Aquarium Hobby

The aquarium trade has a complicated history. Wild collection, habitat destruction, unsustainable breeding practices, and illegal importation have all left their mark on the hobby — and on the ecosystems that supply it. As a business that loves aquatic life, we believe it's our responsibility to do better.

At Chloe's Aquatic Centre, ethical sourcing isn't a marketing line. It's a genuine commitment that shapes every purchasing decision we make. Here's how we approach it.

We Prioritise Captive-Bred Stock

Wherever possible, we source captive-bred fish, shrimp, and snails over wild-caught specimens. Captive-bred animals are:

  • Better adapted to aquarium conditions
  • Less stressed during transport
  • Free from wild-caught parasites and diseases
  • Not contributing to pressure on wild populations

For species where captive breeding isn't yet established at scale — such as some wild Betta species or rare plecos — we work exclusively with licensed importers who comply with Australian biosecurity regulations and CITES requirements.

Our Supplier Standards

We don't work with just anyone. Our suppliers must meet a set of non-negotiable standards:

  • Licensed and compliant: All importers must hold valid Australian import permits and comply with DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) biosecurity requirements.
  • Transparent about origins: We ask where every species comes from and how it was collected or bred.
  • Committed to animal welfare: Suppliers must demonstrate appropriate holding conditions, low mortality rates, and responsible shipping practices.
  • No prohibited species: We will not stock species that are prohibited under Australian law, regardless of demand.

Aquatic Plants: Tissue Culture and Pesticide-Free

Our plant sourcing follows the same principles. We stock a wide range of tissue culture (TC) plants — laboratory-grown specimens that are:

  • 100% free from pests, snails, and algae spores
  • Pesticide-free and safe for shrimp tanks
  • Grown in sterile conditions for consistent quality

For non-TC plants, we source from reputable Australian and international growers who use responsible growing practices. We quarantine all new plant stock before it goes on sale.

Quarantine: Our Non-Negotiable Step

Every batch of live fish and invertebrates that arrives at Chloe's Aquatic Centre goes through a mandatory quarantine period before being offered for sale. During quarantine, we:

  • Observe animals for signs of disease or stress
  • Treat prophylactically where appropriate
  • Ensure animals are eating and behaving normally
  • Confirm water parameter acclimatisation

This adds time and cost to our operation — but it means you receive healthier animals and we reduce the risk of introducing disease into your tank.

Supporting Conservation Through Education

We believe the best thing we can do for wild aquatic ecosystems is to educate our customers. When hobbyists understand where their fish come from, why certain species are rare, and how to keep animals successfully, they become advocates for conservation — not contributors to the problem.

That's why we invest in content like this blog, detailed care guides on every product page, and honest conversations about species suitability. We'd rather talk you out of a purchase that isn't right for your setup than make a sale that ends badly for the animal.

Our Commitment Going Forward

Ethical sourcing is an ongoing journey, not a destination. We're constantly reviewing our supply chain, seeking out better breeders, and staying up to date with Australian import regulations and conservation status updates. If you ever have questions about where a specific species comes from or how it was sourced, please ask — we're always happy to share what we know.

Thank you for supporting a business that takes these things seriously. Every purchase you make from Chloe's Aquatic Centre helps us continue to do things the right way.
