There's a Whole World of Bettas You've Never Seen

When most people think of Betta fish, they picture the flowing fins and vivid colours of the domesticated Betta splendens found in pet stores worldwide. But the genus Betta contains over 70 recognised species — and many of them are strikingly beautiful, behaviourally fascinating, and surprisingly peaceful compared to their domesticated cousins.

What Makes Wild Bettas Different?

Wild Bettas are generally smaller, less aggressive, and more behaviourally complex than domestic Bettas. Many are mouthbrooders (the male holds eggs in his mouth until they hatch), rather than bubble nesters. They tend to prefer soft, acidic, tannin-rich water — conditions that mimic the blackwater streams and peat swamps of Southeast Asia.

Species Spotlight

1. Betta macrostoma — Brunei Beauty

Betta macrostoma is widely regarded as one of the most stunning wild Bettas in existence. Native to Brunei and Sarawak, this paternal mouthbrooder displays rich orange and black banding that intensifies during courtship. It requires cool, soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.5, 22–25°C) and a species-only or carefully chosen tank setup.

2. Betta albimarginata — Strawberry Betta

A compact and relatively peaceful mouthbrooder from Borneo, Betta albimarginata is a great entry point into wild Bettas. Males display a striking red body with white-edged fins. They can be kept in pairs or small groups in a well-planted tank.

3. Betta channoides — Snakehead Betta

Named for its elongated, snakehead-like profile, Betta channoides is a small mouthbrooder from East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It's one of the more adaptable wild Betta species and a good choice for hobbyists stepping up from B. splendens.

4. Betta imbellis — Peaceful Betta

True to its name, Betta imbellis is one of the most peaceful Betta species and can even be kept in small groups in a heavily planted tank. Native to Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia, it displays iridescent blue-green scales and red fin edging.

  • Water: Soft to moderately hard (pH 5.5–7.5)
  • Temp: 24–28°C
  • Skill Level: Beginner–Intermediate

5. Betta pugnax — Penang Betta

Betta pugnax is a larger, robust mouthbrooder from Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. It's one of the original wild Betta species studied by scientists and has a calm, inquisitive temperament. It does well in a species tank with plenty of leaf litter and hiding spots.

  • Water: Soft, slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0)
  • Temp: 23–27°C
  • Skill Level: Intermediate

Setting Up a Wild Betta Tank

Wild Bettas thrive in blackwater-style setups that replicate their natural habitat:

  • Tannins: Add Indian almond leaves, alder cones, or driftwood to soften and acidify the water naturally.
  • Low flow: Wild Bettas prefer calm water — use a sponge filter or baffle your filter output.
  • Dense planting: Java Fern, mosses, and floating plants provide cover and reduce stress.
  • Dim lighting: Subdued lighting mimics the shaded streams of Southeast Asia and encourages natural behaviour.
  • Tight lid: All Bettas are jumpers — a secure lid is essential.
