Regal, intelligent, and breathtakingly beautiful, Symphysodon spp. have earned their title as the "King of the Aquarium" many times over. They are also one of the most demanding fish you can keep β€” and that challenge is precisely what makes successfully keeping and breeding them so deeply rewarding. This guide covers everything you need to know to give discus the care they deserve.


Species Overview

Discus belong to the genus Symphysodon and are native to the warm, soft, acidic blackwater and clearwater rivers of the Amazon Basin in South America β€” including the Rio Negro, Rio SolimΓ΅es, and their tributaries. Three wild species are recognised: Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Green Discus), S. discus (Heckel Discus), and S. tarzoo (Red Discus). From these, decades of selective breeding have produced an extraordinary array of captive strains β€” from the classic Turquoise and Pigeon Blood to the modern Albino, Checkerboard, Snake Skin, and beyond.

Discus are laterally compressed, disc-shaped cichlids that can reach 15–20cm in diameter. They are highly social, forming strong hierarchies within a group, and are known for their intelligence and ability to recognise their keepers.


Are Discus Right for You?

Before diving in, it's worth being honest: discus are not beginner fish. They require pristine water quality, warm temperatures, a high-protein diet, and consistent, attentive husbandry. They are also a significant financial investment. However, for the intermediate to advanced aquarist willing to commit to their needs, discus are extraordinarily rewarding β€” few experiences in the hobby compare to a group of healthy, full-grown discus gliding through a well-planted aquarium.


Tank Setup

Tank Size

Discus require space. A minimum of 200L is recommended for a group of 6 juveniles, with larger tanks strongly preferred as they grow. Adult discus should be kept in tanks of at least 300–400L for a group. The general rule of thumb is 40–60L of water per adult discus.

Discus are tall fish and appreciate height in their aquarium β€” aim for a tank at least 50cm tall to accommodate their body shape and natural behaviour.

Filtration

Excellent filtration is non-negotiable. Discus produce significant waste and are highly sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and elevated nitrate. A high-quality canister filter (or multiple filters) with a turnover rate of 8–10x the tank volume per hour is recommended. Biological filtration must be well-established before introducing discus β€” never add discus to an uncycled tank.

Many experienced discus keepers run bare-bottom tanks (no substrate) to make cleaning easier and reduce waste accumulation. While planted discus tanks are absolutely achievable and stunning, they require more careful management.

Planted vs. Bare-Bottom

  • Bare-bottom tanks are easier to keep clean, allow better monitoring of fish health and waste, and are preferred for breeding setups and growing out juveniles.
  • Planted tanks with discus are a pinnacle of the aquascaping hobby. Use plants that tolerate warm temperatures β€” Amazon swords (Echinodorus spp.), Vallisneria, Anubias, and Microsorum (Java fern) are all excellent choices. Avoid plants that require cool water or high light if keeping a warm discus setup.

Water Parameters

Water quality is the single most important factor in discus keeping. Discus are unforgiving of poor conditions.

  • Temperature: 28–31Β°C β€” discus require warm water, warmer than most tropical fish. This is one reason they are best kept with species that share this temperature preference.
  • pH: 6.0–7.0 β€” slightly acidic to neutral. Wild-caught discus and Heckel discus prefer lower pH (5.5–6.5); captive-bred strains are more adaptable.
  • Hardness: Soft to very soft water (0–10 dGH). Discus originate from some of the softest water on Earth. If your tap water is hard, consider using RO (reverse osmosis) water remineralised to the appropriate level.
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm at all times.
  • Nitrate: Keep below 20 ppm; ideally below 10 ppm. Regular water changes are essential.

Water Changes

Frequent water changes are the cornerstone of discus husbandry. Most experienced keepers perform daily or every-other-day water changes of 25–50%, particularly for juvenile discus which are growing rapidly and most sensitive to nitrate accumulation. For adults in a well-planted, lightly stocked tank, 2–3 water changes per week may suffice. Always match the temperature and parameters of new water carefully to avoid shocking the fish.


Diet

Discus are omnivores with a strong preference for protein-rich foods. In the wild, they feed on invertebrates, small crustaceans, plant matter, and detritus. In captivity, a varied, high-quality diet is essential for growth, colour development, and breeding condition.

Staple Foods

  • Discus beef heart mix: A traditional staple in the discus hobby β€” a blended mixture of beef heart, prawns, vegetables, and vitamins. Many keepers make their own; high-quality commercial versions are also available.
  • High-quality discus pellets or granules: A convenient and nutritionally complete option for daily feeding.
  • Frozen bloodworm: Highly palatable and excellent for conditioning; feed regularly but not exclusively.

Supplemental Foods

  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Frozen daphnia
  • Live blackworm (excellent for conditioning breeders)

Feed juveniles 3–5 times daily to support rapid growth. Adults can be fed 2–3 times daily. Remove uneaten food promptly β€” discus tanks must be kept scrupulously clean.


Tank Mates

Choosing tank mates for discus requires careful consideration. The warm temperatures required by discus rule out many common community fish. Suitable companions include:

  • Cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi): The classic discus companion β€” they share the same warm, soft, acidic water preferences and look stunning alongside discus.
  • Rummy nose tetras
  • Altum angelfish (with caution β€” ensure size compatibility)
  • Corydoras sterbai: One of the few Corydoras species that tolerates discus temperatures well
  • Otocinclus (in established planted setups)
  • German blue rams
  • Apistogramma species (with adequate space)

Avoid housing discus with boisterous, fast-moving, or fin-nipping species. Discus are sensitive and can be easily stressed by aggressive tank mates, which suppresses their immune system and leads to disease.


Common Health Issues

Discus are susceptible to a range of health issues, most of which are linked to stress and poor water quality. Prevention through excellent husbandry is always preferable to treatment.

  • Hole-in-the-head (HITH): Pitting or erosion around the head and lateral line, associated with poor water quality, nutritional deficiencies, and the protozoan Hexamita. Treat with improved water conditions, diet, and metronidazole if necessary.
  • Internal parasites: Common in wild-caught and imported discus. Symptoms include white, stringy faeces, loss of appetite, and wasting. Treat with appropriate antiparasitic medication (e.g., metronidazole, praziquantel).
  • Bacterial infections: Fin rot, ulcers, and cloudy eyes are often secondary to stress or injury. Treat with water quality improvement and antibacterial medication.
  • Ich (White Spot): Less common in warm discus tanks (high temperatures inhibit the parasite), but possible. Treat with a quality ich treatment.
  • Discus plague: A colloquial term for a highly contagious viral-like illness causing darkening, clamped fins, excess mucus, and rapid decline. Strict quarantine of new fish is the best prevention.

Quarantine all new discus for a minimum of 4–6 weeks before introducing them to an established tank. This is non-negotiable and will protect your existing fish from introduced pathogens.


Breeding Discus

Successfully breeding discus is considered one of the pinnacle achievements in the freshwater hobby. It requires patience, excellent husbandry, and a deep understanding of the fish's needs β€” but the reward of watching a pair raise their fry is unlike anything else in the aquarium world.

Sexing Discus

Discus are notoriously difficult to sex visually. Males tend to be slightly larger with a more pronounced forehead (nuchal hump), and the breeding tube (ovipositor) of females is broader and more rounded than the male's pointed tube β€” but this is only visible when the fish are in spawning condition. The most reliable method is to allow a group of 6–8 juveniles to grow up together and pair naturally.

Conditioning for Breeding

To bring discus into breeding condition, provide:

  • Pristine water quality with frequent water changes
  • A high-protein, varied diet including live and frozen foods
  • Stable, warm temperatures (29–31Β°C)
  • A spawning cone or broad-leafed plant (such as an Amazon sword) as a spawning substrate

Spawning Behaviour

When a pair is ready to spawn, you'll notice them cleaning a vertical surface β€” typically a spawning cone, broad leaf, or the aquarium glass β€” with increasing intensity. They will become territorial, chasing other fish away from their chosen site. The female deposits rows of eggs on the cleaned surface, and the male follows to fertilise them. A typical clutch contains 100–300 eggs.

Both parents guard the eggs fiercely, fanning them with their fins to maintain oxygenation and removing any unfertilised eggs. Eggs hatch in approximately 48–60 hours at 30Β°C.

Raising Fry β€” The Unique Discus Parenting Behaviour

What makes discus breeding truly extraordinary is how the fry are raised. For the first 1–2 weeks of life, discus fry feed exclusively on a nutritious mucus secreted from the skin of both parents. The fry attach themselves to the parents' flanks and graze on this mucus β€” a behaviour unique among aquarium fish and one of the most remarkable sights in the hobby.

During this period, it is essential not to disturb the family. Keep the tank quiet, maintain excellent water quality, and avoid sudden changes in lighting or environment. After 1–2 weeks, the fry will begin accepting baby brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered foods, gradually becoming independent of the parents.

First-time pairs often eat their eggs or abandon their fry β€” this is normal and usually improves with subsequent spawns as the pair gains experience. Patience is essential.


Wild-Caught vs. Captive-Bred Discus

Captive-bred discus are generally hardier, more adaptable to a wider range of water parameters, and easier to feed than wild-caught specimens. They are the recommended starting point for most keepers. Wild-caught discus β€” particularly Heckel discus (S. discus) β€” are stunning but significantly more demanding, requiring very soft, acidic water and often arriving with a parasite load that requires careful treatment. They are best left to experienced discus keepers.
